As I looked at Puerto Nuevo from the front, large, flashy posters surrounded me, advertising all of the amenities the resort offered. These amenities included a buffet breakfast, an indoor pool, a large playground, and even its own built-in “Mini Zoo.” So I walked in, having high expectations for the resort.

Puerto Nuevo is a resort in Rosarito, Mexico. It is about a 3 ½ hour drive from the Los Angeles area. The resort is located right by the beach, and is within walking distance of multiple restaurants. Everything about the resort seemed perfect. But, nothing is perfect, and as I walked into our hotel room, I realized that this place was no exception.

The hotel room did not feel like a resort. Rather, it felt like a Motel 6. I don’t know if it was the cracks in the wall, the worn out paint, or the popcorn ceilings. However, it wasn’t just the hotel room, signs of wear and tear could be found everywhere in the resort. Having been to many resorts in the area around Puerto Nuevo, I knew the cracks and scratches were not normal.

The buffet experience was a pain, as best. The resort is “all inclusive”, which means that anyone can enjoy the amenities if they pay for the buffet. For that reason, the line to even get into the dining area stretched all the way to the lobby. We waited for over an hour before we could even pick out a table. The dining experience was underwhelming, with the food choices benign limited and the flavors being kind of bland.

I wish I could say better things about the rest of the resort, but the other “amenities” were no better. The “Mini Zoo” was just a petting zoo with goats and not much else. The indoor pool was ridden with cracks and stains that took away from the relaxing feel of indoor pools. The bar near the pool was closed, and it did not look like it was opening anytime soon. The beach view was beautiful, but getting to the sand requires a long walk that winds through the sketchiest parts of Rosarito.

Overall, this resort has a lot of potential. If they were to renovate the hotel rooms, patch up the cracks, and expand the buffet and “Mini Zoo,” Puerto Nuevo could be the ideal place for a weekend getaway. However, the resort is far from ideal. If you want a relaxing vacation in Mexico, I recommend taking your business elsewhere.
