Although New York takes a spotlight for its landmarks and architectural advancements made over the years, it has also gained prominence in pop culture, as well. From movies, to shows, and a renowned superhero by the name of Spider-Man. That’s the hero praised by many Marvel enthusiasts today. Marvel and PlayStation form a liaison once again to delve even deeper into the expanding universes of Spider-Man in Marvel’s Spider Man: Miles Morales.
When I first launched the adventure, I saw the titular character, in a fur-lined winter coat and salt-speckled Timbs, tapping away on his phone while aboard public transit. It felt amazing to swing back into action as Miles donned his own suit, consisting of a blue winter coat, basketball shorts, and a slick pair of red and black Adidas. The game works off of the formula of the first. Since there is great similarity to Marvel’s Spider Man, which was released back in 2018, this adventure’s differences become even more crucial.
For some who may not know, Spider-Man: Miles Morales was released not only for Sony’s current-gen PlayStation 4, but also as a launch title for their next-gen PlayStation 5. The PS5’s hardware enhances this experience. The game introduces a new story with a brand-new setting just one year after the Devil’s Breath crisis and the Maggia’s gang war (the first game). The protagonist, Miles Morales, continues to adapt to his new role as a Spider-Man, and before long, in the middle of a turf war between Roxxon, a monolithic energy conglomerate, and The Underground, a high-tech criminal army led by the Tinkerer, who drives the story even further. In the midst of the chaos, Miles awakens his unique powers that set him apart from his mentor, Peter Parker. Such powers include bio-electricity that enhances the combat experience. As you progress, you’ll recognize some key characters that tie in to the 2018 film Spider Man: Into the Spider Verse, and each have their own goals. For example, Miles’ mother is running for city council. Also, Miles’ best friend Ganke is developing a video game, as well as assisting Miles on the path to heroism that Tony Stark and Bruce Wayne have taken.
Though short, Marvel’s Spider Man: Miles Morales is a vivacious experience for Spider fans. It is full of outrageous twists and turns, and unfortunately would take 7-8 hours to complete the main story. From swinging across the city at high speed with finesse, to taking down New York’s most dastardly villains, Miles Morales goes beyond the title of “your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man'' as his heroism extends beyond the Spider-culture and the throne that he is heir to.
