New Phone Policy

This year a new electronic policy is in place at RCMS. Created by administrators Mr. Spear and Mr. Wiers, this policy requires students to turn in their phones at the start of the day and retrieve them after the school day is over.

Assistant Principal Mr. Wiers said, “Mr. Spear and myself talked about it a lot over this summer and we were trying to figure something out to make phones less used during class time. Some students would ask to use the restroom and go on their phones. I think that if students had phones in their pockets then it would be a huge distraction. So overall Mr. Spear and I think that policy helps to keep students in line in class and focus better. Phones can have benefits, but students can make bad decisions.”

At the beginning of this school year, this policy shook the whole school. When fellow 7th grader Victoria B. was asked if she feels comfortable placing her phone in a safe she stated, “No, I like to have my phone close to me because it makes me feel safe."

7th grader Mia T. stated, “Yes, I like the policy because it doesn’t distract students and keeps them focused."

Mr. Beebe said “I think it’s amazing. What I would change about this policy is the safety and security of where we store the phones.”

This policy has a lot of pros and cons, no policy is perfect and will please every person. Yet Mr. Spear and Mr. Wiers are doing their best.

The principal, Mr. Spear said, “The bottom line is that here at the middle school there has been a history of students making poor choices with electronics. Looking at the purpose of a cell phone then in the course of the school day, students do not need to have their phones on campus. We believe that this helps to make better students.”
