Just a few days before school started, 8th grade history teacher, Mr. Van Soelen, decided to cut his long Jesus-style hair and try out a new look. It turns out the barber was his fiancée Ms. Sarah Nydam, a paraprofessional at the upper school.

“My hair was cut in the comfort of my own bathroom,” he said.

“I grew my hair out for fun during quarantine back when Tiger King and Zoom were new and all the rage," he added.

His mom really wanted him to cut it before his sister Mikaela's wedding on July 23. However, for whatever reason, he decided not to cut his hair for the wedding. In Iowa for his sister’s wedding, he said people did not recognize him because of his long hair. When he came back to California and decided to cut it, people in California did not recognize him. Mr. V says he cut his hair because of the school dresscode.

7th grader Victoria B. said, “I did not know who he was until I saw him walking with Ms. Sarah.”

Fellow 7th grader Tessa V.G. added, “I knew it was coming." She went on to say, “I did not think he would follow through with it; he should have left it a little longer.”

Mr. V. likes his haircut because he says it is easier to take care of.
