Jonah the Bird Man

By Andrew V.

The date was December 15, 2020 in downtown Redlands. Then 6th grader Jonah H., walked into a store. The smell of animals and hay fluttered into his nose. There were many animals in all shapes and sizes. The animals ranged from fish to turtles to lizards and many other things. There were many dog toys, cat toys, fish food, dog food, cat food, you name it. Then something caught his eye.

There, in a white cage, was a small, but beautiful bird. A grey cockatiel to be exact. However the price was shocking. $250 dollars for a bird, and on top of that was the tax of $50.. However with the money Jonah saved up, he was able to purchase this wonderful bird of his and name it Titanium. On the ride home, Titanium was sitting in a box that was made for transporting birds. She was anxiously waiting for her new home in Redlands.

¨I think my bird is very intelligent and cute, Jonah said. He added that his bird is like an actual person and is very shy when you first meet her.

However after getting to know her and living with her, she becomes less shy. Throughout the day she will squawk, squeal, chirp and make many other noises. It drives him and his brother, Justin, crazy. To get her to be quiet he will put a towel over her cage. ¨It will usually calm her down.¨ Jonah said. Another cool thing about Jonah's bird is that she likes to sing when other people are singing. Jonah one day started whistling and was just walking around the house and Titanium just decided to chime in.

They sang to the tune "Don't Worry, Be Happy" by Bobby McFarren, a talented artist in the 1960s known for mixing folk songs, rock, soul tunes, and jazz theme originals. Some of Jonah's favorite types of music genres are, well, really anything, but he hates country music .

Even if you're thinking about getting a bird, Jonah does not recommend it. Even though Jonah loves his bird, he says it is a lot of work but it is worth it in the end. However, if you do consider getting a bird, Jonah recommends a Budgie Parakeet. "It depends on the bird you want. There are birds ranging from 1200 to 25 dollars. I would personally recommend the Budgie bird because it's cheap and only costs 25 dollars. On top of that, it lives to 7 to 15 years."

If you want to talk about getting a bird or want to talk about birds in general, then talk to Jonah.
