On October 10, the Sandalwood fires were ignited in Calimesa. The fire destroyed 74 structures and killed two people. When it was put out on October 14, Redlands Christian Middle School acknowledged that these fire victims needed help. Together, Mr. Moore and student leadership created a friendly competition that would ensure both fun and help for the fire victims.

Mr. Moore is the history teacher at RCMS and a key person in student leadership. Mr. Moore says, “In total we raised $30 short of $2900.”

The date is November 13, and the afternoon announcements have an interesting new contest. The time has come to bring your change and dollars and dominate this challenge! The winner gets to enjoy a food party. The secret to success is to dump your change into your advisory’s bucket and dump your cash into your opposing enemy advisories. Hurry! The contest ends on November 20.

Once it began, there was no turning back. Every advisory wanted to win. Whether their strategy was to dump their change into their bucket or to sneak some bucks into another advisory’s bucket, the buckets quickly filled up.

Student leadership shared the winner each day during announcements. On Wednesday, November 13, it was announced the winner was Mr. Van Soelen’s advisory. Later I learned from an interview with Mr. Moore that in total the students had raised about $2870.

When asked if she was surprised by the amount raised, Eden Anderson, an 8th grader on the student leadership said, “Yes! It was more than I expected and I was so pumped that we could raise that much for the fire victims.”

No doubt it was difficult to organize a fundraiser like this and required a lot of dedication to count all the coins. However, it all paid off when RCMS was able to help the fire victims.
